Describe the structure of viruses?

Viruses are simple organisms. They have a protein coat, and nucleic acid(the genetic material) which codes for the proteins they make. Their genetic material can be either DNA, or RNA as it is in the case of retroviruses(Ex. HIV). The protein coat that surrounds them is called capsid, they also may have glycoproteins that recognize specific cells to infect since they are pathogens(cause disease).

Viruses are 鈥渢iny capsules of genetic information that can reprogram a living cell to produce new virus particles instead of the cell鈥檚 normal products and probably cause more cases of infectious disease than any other type of pathogen.鈥? The common cold, influenza, cold sores, measles, chicken pox, polio, some forms of hepatitis, 鈥渕ono,鈥?and mumps are diseases caused by viruses, in which most communicable. Rabies (from infected animals) and encephalitis (from mosquitoes) are non-communicable diseases caused by viruses. 鈥淪ome viruses are very specific, damaging only certain kinds of tissues. For example, the viruses that cause colds and the flu can infect only the respiratory tract; they cannot infect other internal organs or the skin. The rabies virus infects only nerves cells and cells of the salivary glands.鈥?(Health in Christian Perspective, 1999, p.186)
