In some cases, yes. I have seen no evidence that these are caused or propagated by the serious virus protection companies--as in the four major companies.
That's a great conspiracy and is a possibility but it would be quite bad for business if the customers do find out. As for those ex-virus writer, they can certainly be working for anti-virus company, which can use their expertise and knowledge of the underground. Just as Kevin Mitnick, the hacker, works as security consultant.
