I have listed a few anti virus and a few anti spyware programs that are available for download and are completely free: I will not get involved with the rights and wrongs of each package or its effectiveness or indeed 鈥淭his is best鈥?or 鈥淭his is crap鈥?statements. Whatever you do, just make sure you have one of each type installed, updated and fully working:

1) Download a free (reputable) AV

2) Reboot and allow it to set itself up properly

3) Reboot again into Safe Mode

4) Allow it to scan your system which will seem like forever but worth it

5) Allow the program to quarantine or remove the virus

6) Perform updates at least weekly

You should also have at least one anti-spyware program. Ad-Aware, AVG AntiSpyware, SUPERAntiSpyware, Spybot Search %26 Destroy, Windows Defender (NOT IE Defender) are free/offer free versions. AVG ANtiSpyware and SUPERAntiSpyware are probably the best of those, and you should be able to use both (turn the real-tine scanning off in one, e.g. AVG).

The main thing is to keep malicious software off in the first place, which is why you need an AV and AS with real-time scanning. SpywareBlaster can also help keep the crap off, as can a HOSTS file.
