Can you get viruses on a external hard drive?

''Get Viruses'' is a relative thing. First, understand what a virus is and is not. It is not a bacteria or human virus (although that is a different category problem if you get sick from your hard drive). It is an application or bit of code that does some kind of malicious activity when executed. For example, if you run a program called ''FunJoke.exe'' and expect a clown to appear, and it actually deletes your files....that is a virus. If you open an image that has a background application which sends emails to all your email addrsss book, that is a virus. You get the idea.

So, to your question, the answer is yes. Viruses can be stored on external drives, memory sticks, network file shares, and even your camera memory if you download the code the code there. They can be executed on your computer from each place.

If I extend your question, it is suggested that you run a virus scan on each periodically.

surely..you may get it to your external hard drive also..
u can get viruses and malware on any storage device ie floppies, hdds, zip drives, pen drives, memory cards ect..
It's obvious that external devices also get affected due viruses. When they attached to u r computer make sure that any virus don't get in coz that can damage the drive quite easily. So i suggest u that scan u r external device regularly as it can increase the life of the device
Any disk drive that is accessible by you (in Windows) is accessible by a virus. That means, if you have an external drive connected (USB thumb drive; USB hard drive) or have a disk in your floppy drive; or are connected to a shared network drive; these are all places a virus can copy themselves to.
